RV Campsite Checklist: 7 Things to Verify Before Booking

A practical, firsthand checklist for checking access, slope, hookups, clearances, rules, and privacy before you reserve an RV campsite.

The reservation is easy. The arrival is the real test.

This RV campsite checklist focuses on the details that determine whether a site actually works for your rig. A campground can look perfect online and still be a poor fit for your rig. A listing may say “RV site” without telling you whether your combined setup can negotiate the final turn, whether the pad slopes, or whether a tree blocks the slide on the driver’s side. A practical booking process starts before clicking Reserve. Look at the site itself, the route into it, the services the trip actually requires, and the rules that will shape the stay. A few extra minutes of research can prevent an awkward arrival—or the much worse discovery that the site cannot safely accommodate the RV. We learned that lesson at River Walk RV Park in Coeur d’Alene. Our reservation was for a pull-through site, but the listing did not show a support cable attached to a power pole beside the entrance. With occupied sites on both sides, the cable left very little room to maneuver our rig. A neighbor helped spot while I made multiple back-and-forth turns to enter without scraping the cable. The site technically fit; reaching it safely was the real problem. This seven-part checklist is a useful starting point for a more confident booking.

1. Confirm the entire setup fits—not just the RV

Start with the campground’s stated equipment limits, then compare them with the measurements that apply to your setup. For a motorhome, that may be the vehicle length plus any towed car. For a travel trailer or fifth-wheel, consider the trailer, tow vehicle, and how the pair will fit when hitched and when parked. Our current setup is a 2025 Brinkley Z3100 fifth-wheel towed by a 2024 RAM 3500 Mega Cab Limited with single rear wheels and the 6-foot-4-inch short bed. Brinkley publishes the trailer’s exterior length as 34 feet 11 inches, which we round to 35 feet. Stellantis lists the Mega Cab short-bed truck at 249.9 inches, or just under 20 feet 10 inches. Before that, we traveled in a 2022 Leisure Travel Van Unity FX at 25 feet. The two published lengths add up to approximately 55 feet 9 inches, but that is not the length of the combination on the road because the fifth-wheel overlaps the truck bed. Based on the published dimensions and a hitch located near the rear axle, approximately 52 feet is a useful planning estimate for the hitched combination. Hitch and kingpin position can shift the exact bumper-to-rear measurement, so we use the estimate cautiously when a reservation is tight. When choosing a site where the unhitched RAM must park inline with the Brinkley, we use roughly 56 feet as a conservative starting footprint. The change from the Unity is about more than ten additional feet of RV. The Unity combined the vehicle and living space into one compact unit, while the Brinkley reservation has to accommodate the trailer, the truck, and the turning geometry of the pair. A campsite that appears generous for a 25-foot motorhome can be marginal for the current setup before slide clearance, hitching space, and tow-vehicle parking are considered. Do not assume every campground measures the same way. Yosemite publishes separate maximum lengths for RVs and trailers and warns that turning radius can matter as much as the number on the site description. The National Park Service also directs campers to reserve a site that matches the equipment they will actually bring. Check:
  • Maximum RV or trailer length
  • Driveway length and width
  • Number of vehicles allowed at the site
  • Whether the tow vehicle must fit on the pad
  • Back-in versus pull-through configuration
  • Space for safely unhitching and reconnecting
If the wording is unclear, call the campground. “Will this rig fit?” is less useful than giving the exact lengths and asking how the site is measured.

2. Study the approach, not only the pad

A sufficiently long site can still be inaccessible. Tight loops, narrow bridges, low branches, steep grades, and sharp turns may be the real limiting factors. This matters differently with each of our rigs. The former 25-foot Unity required room for a single vehicle to maneuver. The 35-foot Brinkley still needs enough swing room for the RAM during turns and backing, so the approach can rule out a site even when the published pad length looks adequate. Look at the campground map and, when available, satellite imagery or recent traveler photos. Trace the route from the entrance to the site. Pay attention to one-way loops, internal road width, turn direction, and obstacles near the driveway. A back-in site on the correct side of a one-way loop can be much easier than the same site facing the opposite direction. Our own research starts with the campground website and its photographs of individual sites. If anything about the layout looks questionable, we inspect the campground in Google Earth and then read recent Google and Yelp reviews for obstacles or access problems that may not appear in the official description. The missing power-pole cable at River Walk is exactly the kind of detail we now try to catch before arrival. Recreation.gov site pages often list useful details such as driveway entry, surface, grade, driveway length, and maximum vehicle length. Treat those fields as the beginning of the research, not a substitute for reading alerts and campground-specific rules.

3. Check the pad surface and grade

“Paved,” “gravel,” and “dirt” tell you the material, but not whether the site is level. A slight grade may be manageable; a pronounced slope can complicate leveling, slide operation, entry steps, and hitching. Look for:
  • Surface type and condition
  • Reported grade or slope
  • Wheel rutting, soft shoulders, or drainage channels
  • Space for leveling blocks
  • A drop-off beside the pad
  • Whether stabilizers will land on firm ground
Recent photos are especially helpful here. If the site is surrounded by snowmelt, loose soil, or deep shade, seasonal conditions may affect it differently than the summer marketing photo suggests. We once parked our Unity at a sloped site at Tahoe Donner Campground without leveling blocks. When we used the leveling jacks, the front tires ended up about five inches above the ground. That experience taught us to carry leveling blocks and to take seriously any sign that a site is substantially out of level instead of expecting the jacks to solve the entire problem.

4. Verify every hookup you expect

“Full hookups” should mean electric, water, and sewer at the site, but individual listings can be inconsistent. Confirm each service rather than relying on a label. For electricity, check the available amperage. For water, determine whether the connection is at the site or elsewhere in the campground. For sewer, distinguish a true site hookup from access to a dump station. Also check where the hookups sit relative to the pad. A pedestal or sewer connection at the far end of a long site may require more hose or cable than you normally carry. For our current setup, a 50-amp electrical connection is the only non-negotiable hookup when the weather requires air conditioning, at least until we add a generator. We can generally manage three to four days without water or sewer connections. The Unity could remain self-contained for about five days before we needed fresh water and a dump station, although that required rationing showers. We have needed to connect both of our sewer hoses to reach a badly positioned inlet, which is why two sections now travel with us. We have not yet needed the extra water hose or power cable, but we carry both so an awkward utility location does not make an otherwise workable site unusable. The Tahoe Donner Campground page, for example, specifically advertises water and electrical hookups, while its separate rates page lists dump-station access. By contrast, Yosemite states that its campgrounds have no hookups and only limited dump-station options. The lesson is simple: even well-known campgrounds can offer very different utility setups.

5. Look for slide, awning, and overhead clearance

The pad may fit the RV while the usable space does not. Trees, posts, boulders, picnic tables, and neighboring vehicles can interfere with slides and awnings. Overhead branches can create a separate risk for the roof, air conditioner, antenna, or solar equipment. Compare listing photos with your floor plan. Know which side each slide opens and how much clearance it needs. If a photograph shows the site empty, imagine the RV positioned on the pad—not in the most spacious part of the frame. Also look for a safe walking path around the rig. A technically usable slide is not enough if the entry steps open against a slope or the utilities force someone into the road. We recently backed the Brinkley into a site at Auburn Gold Country RV Park where a tall concrete post had been installed to protect the utility pedestal. The trailer fit, but the post prevented the kitchen slide from opening completely. We extended it only as far as the clearance allowed and made do until we could move to a larger site. A blocked awning is much more common, but that is rarely a deciding factor for us because we do not consider awning use essential.

6. Read the rules that affect daily life

Campground rules are part of the product you are reserving. Quiet hours, generator windows, pet restrictions, fire rules, vehicle limits, check-in procedures, and maximum-stay policies can change whether a campground suits a particular trip. For example, Tahoe Donner’s current policies say dogs must be leashed and limit each site to two dogs for a fee. The campground also currently prohibits wood and charcoal fires. Yosemite limits generator use to published time windows. These are not minor details if you are traveling with a dog, relying on a generator, or planning meals around a campfire. Before booking, scan the official campground page for:
  • Pet limits, leash requirements, and fees
  • Generator hours
  • Fire and grill restrictions
  • Quiet hours
  • Check-in and late-arrival instructions
  • Extra-vehicle or visitor fees
  • Cancellation and change policies
Rules and fees change. Recheck the official page shortly before departure, even if you have stayed there before.

7. Choose the right site for the trip you actually want

After the technical checks, ask whether the location supports the reason for the trip. A site beside the bathhouse may be convenient and busy. A wooded edge site may feel private but receive less solar exposure. A spot near a trail can be ideal with a dog and less ideal if foot traffic passes the windows all day. Consider:
  • Distance to restrooms, water, trash, and the dump station
  • Road, playground, or communal-area noise
  • Sun exposure and shade
  • Cell service or Wi-Fi needs
  • Trail and lake access
  • Pet-walking options
  • Privacy from neighboring sites
There is no universally perfect campsite. The best choice matches the rig, the season, and how you plan to spend the stay. Traveling with Callie is usually easy, but it changes what makes a campsite appealing. We look for parks with large open spaces, trails, and ideally a dedicated pet area, while staying as far from vehicle traffic as possible. We value amenities that emphasize nature and room to explore. A swimming pool, on the other hand, adds little value because we rarely use one. Park layout, privacy, and noise matter just as much as the campsite dimensions. Sites packed close together—or positioned beside a highway—can create enough neighbor and traffic noise to cause stress and lost sleep. A longer list of amenities does not compensate for a stay that feels crowded or never becomes quiet.

A quick pre-booking check

Before reserving, aim for seven confident answers:
  1. Does the complete setup fit?
  2. Can the rig reach and enter the site?
  3. Is the surface and grade workable?
  4. Are the required utilities available and reachable?
  5. Is there room for slides, awnings, steps, and roof clearance?
  6. Do the rules fit the way you travel?
  7. Is the location right for this particular stay?
If one answer is uncertain, pause and verify it. A phone call or a different site is far easier than solving the problem with the RV blocking a campground loop.

Final thoughts

The goal is not to eliminate every surprise. It is to reserve a site where the important variables are already working in your favor. That leaves more time for the part of the trip you planned—and less time trying to make an unsuitable campsite fit. Our most important lesson is to evaluate the whole park, not just the advertised length of one site. The approach, fixed obstacles, neighboring sites, utility placement, slide clearance, road noise, and privacy all affect whether a reservation truly works. A careful look at the layout before booking can prevent difficult maneuvering on arrival and make the difference between a restorative stay and several stressful nights.
